De Italiaanse horrorfilm Hyde’s Secret Nightmare is een pseudo-artistieke film van Domiziano Christopharo, die zich vooral bezighoudt met een soort erotische getinte horrorfilms en ook deze film voldoet daaraan. Binnen de internationale wereld van de horrorliefhebbers viel deze film kennelijk in de smaak, want hij kreeg de nodige prijzen. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op het klassieke boek over Jekyll en Hyde van Robert Louis Stevenson, maar Christopharo heeft daar zo z'n eigen, bijna pornografische draai aan gegeven.
Het verhaal draait om Henry Chagall (Claudio Zanelli), een medisch wetenschapper die lijdt aan z'n impotentie. Hij experimenteert op lichamen en uiteindelijk op zichzelf om zijn middel te testen en van z'n impotentie af te komen. Het resultaat is dat hij verandert in een nymfomane vrouw met moordneigingen zolang het serum werkt. Tsja...
De muziek bij deze film is van Kristian Sensini, die voor alle films van Christopharo de muziek componeerde. Hij heeft voor deze horrorfilm een redelijk toegankelijke score geschreven, zonder al teveel echt creepy muziek. Toch ligt een groot deel van de muziek niet gemakkelijk in het gehoor, want een aantal tracks zijn zeker wel voorzien van geluiden en spanningseffecten die nogal ongemakkelijk overkomen.
Senzini heeft de muziek helemaal in zijn eigen studio gecomponeerd en opgenomen. De muziek komt dan ook vrijwel helemaal uit de elektronische trukendoos en is via muzieksamples gemaakt. Een flink deel van de muziek heeft een sterke orkestrale kleuring, maar ook zijn er de nodige tracks die typisch elektronisch klinken. Zelfs de elektrisch gitaar weet aan enkele tracks een rock-achtige kleuring te geven, waarin evenmin de percussie ontbreekt. In een aantal tracks zorgen donkere vervormde stemmen voor een vervreemdend effect, wat een enkele keer door een vrouwelijke operastem komt.
Veel muziek echter zit een beetje tussen orkestraal en elektronisch in, waardoor het een wat aparte kleuring heeft. Daardoor klinkt die muziek regelmatig overigens best aangenaam, al laten de melodieën vaak nogal te wensen over. Soms klinkt de muziek nogal rauw, maar soms juist dromerig. Tegelijk hebben de meeste tracks een meer of mindere mate van spanning in zich, wat gezien het type film natuurlijk niet vreemd is.
In de liner notes van de CD geeft Sensini aan dat hij voor de muziek geïnspireerd is door veel oudere horrorfilms en Italiaanse 'giallo' films. Hij beschouwt zijn score dan ook als een eerbetoon aan andere componisten als Morricone, Goldsmith en Herrmann. Toch heeft zijn muziek geen orkestrale allure en klinkt de muziek eerder als een soort benadering van orkestraal, terwijl erg veel tracks ook duidelijk elektronische invloeden hebben.

The Italian horror film Hyde's Secret Nightmare is a pseudo-artistic film, directed by Domiziano Christopharo, who is mainly producing a sort of erotic horror films and this film also fulfils that criteria. This film was apparently popular within the international world of horror fans, and it received several prizes. The story is based on the classic book about Jekyll and Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, but Christopharo has given it his own, almost pornographic twist.
The story revolves around Henry Chagall (Claudio Zanelli), a medical scientist who suffers from impotence. He experiments on bodies and ultimately drugs himself as a test to cure his impotence. The result is that he turns into a nymphomaniac woman with homicidal tendencies as long as the serum works. Well...
The music for this film is by Kristian Sensini, who composed the music for all of Christopharo's films. He has written a fairly accessible horror film score, without too much really creepy music. Yet a large part of the music is not an easy listening, because several tracks certainly are equipped with sounds and tension effects that are quite uncomfortable.

A large part of the music has a strong orchestral color, but there are also quite a few tracks that sound typically electronic. Even the electric guitar manages to give a rock-like color to some tracks, in which percussion is also prominent. In several tracks dark distorted voices present an alienating effect, which occasionally comes from a female operatic voice.
However, a lot of music sounds somewhere between orchestral and electronic, which gives it a somewhat different coloring. That's why the music regularly sounds quite pleasant, although the melodies often leave a lot to be desired. Sometimes the music sounds quite raw, but elsewhere dreamy. At the same time, most tracks have more or less a level of tension, which of course is not surprising, given the type of film.
In the liner notes of the CD, Sensini indicates that the music was inspired by many older horror films and Italian 'giallo' films. He considers his score a tribute to other horror composers such as Morricone, Goldsmith and Herrmann. Yet his music has no orchestral allure and the music sounds more as a kind of orchestral approach, while many tracks also clearly have electronic influences.
The score ends at track twenty with 'Hyde's End Titles', which is in a fairly pleasant minor key coloring. The double piano strikes on a quiet underscore work out well, but halfway the music nevertheless turns into horror mode with strange and chaotic sounds.

Hyde's Secret Nightmare is an erotic/horror reactionary reinterpretation of the Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The movie includes into its cast one of the most important italian and international actors, such as Venantino Venantini, Roberta Gemma, Nancy De Lucia, Alvia Reale, Yuri Antonosante, Lucia Batassa, Giovanna Nocetti,Francesco Malcolm and Matthias Vannelli. In Hyde's Secret Nightmare, porn actors will join 'normal' actors, in order to create delirious and surreal situations. Claudio Zanelli will play the role of Dr Jekyll, while Roberta Gemma will play the role of Mr Hyde.
