De Amerikaanse horror-monsterfilm Komodo is de enige door Michael Lantieri geregisseerde film. Hij hield zich daarvoor vooral bezig met speciale effecten in films, waaronder de creatie van dierlijke monsters, zoals in Jurassic Park, waarvoor hij een Oscar won. Komodo kwam slechts in een paar bioscopen en ging daarop direct naar video/dvd. Kennelijk heeft Lantieri geleerd dat een film regisseren nog iets anders is dan een verzameling special effects. De film probeerde mee te liften op het succes van diverse andere monsterfilms, zoals Godzilla, Lake Placid en Anaconda.
Het verhaal speelt zich af op een eilandje voor de Amerikaanse oostkust, waar in de zeventiger jaren illegaal bepaalde eieren waren beland. Patrick ging op het eiland vaak met z'n ouders op vakantie, maar die moesten dat op een dag met de dood bekopen, waardoor hij een zwaar trauma opgelopen heeft. Hij raakt onder behandeling bij een psychologe, die niets gelooft van Patrick's verhaal over monsters en denkt dat hij de schuld aan hun dood verdringt. Ze besluit samen met hem opnieuw naar het eiland te gaan...
De muziek bij deze thriller is van John Debney, die twee jaar eerder z'n debuut in het horror genre had met, ook zo'n monsterfilm. Toch heeft Debney de score voor Komodo in een wat meer toegankelijke stijl gecomponeerd dan The Relic. Daarmee heeft Debney's score meer weg van Randy Edelman's score voor Anaconda van eveneens twee jaar eerder, dan van z'n eigen score voor The Relic.
Het album opent met 'The Dragon's Isle', waarin het horrorkarakter van de film duidelijk te horen is. De grommende klanken, de stemmen en de pompende percussie doen het erg goed en verzachten eigenlijk de horrorkleuring wat.
Na deze openingstrack wordt de score veel rustiger, hoewel er nog steeds regelmatig gedeelten voorbij komen die ook die typische horrorklanken laten horen, variërend van ijle, wat jankende geluiden, tot vol aanzwellend orkestraal geweld en van plotselinge uitbarstingen na een bijna stilte tot dissonante, bijna chaotische muziek.
Toch valt die echte horrorkleuring na de openingstrack een beetje weg en wordt de muziek wat meer verhalend. De underscore komt meer naar de voorgrond, waarin vaak wel iets van dreiging doorklinkt, maar die meestal toch wel beperkt blijft. Regelmatig beperkt Debney zich zelfs tot die underscore en omdat de melodieën niet altijd even aansprekend zijn, is een deel van deze tracks toch wat aan de saaie kant. En dat voor een horrorscore. Toch bevat het album nog genoeg horrormuziek om ook de reguliere horrorfan goed te bedienen. Die tracks met echte horrormuziek liggen mij niet zo en mijn voorkeur gaat dan ook uit naar de wat rustiger en melodieuzere tracks of delen daarvan.
De score heeft een heel aardige themamelodie, die in een aantal tracks doorklinkt en al in de wat heftiger openingstrack hoorbaar is. Dit thema komt ook terug in muziek die je nauwelijks in een horrorscore zou verwachten, want een paar keer brengt Debney dit thema of een afgeleide daarvan in een arrangement die een zekere lieflijkheid heeft, of die een meer emotionele lading heeft, zoals 'Summer House', 'Bogue Sound', het mooie, wat donkerder 'Uneasy Return' of het fraaie 'A Piece of Twine'.
Daarnaast bevat het album een aantal tracks die een wat meer geheimzinnige sfeer ademen, enerzijds door het arrangement, anderzijds door het gebruik van bepaalde instrumenten.
Toch is de algehele sfeer zonder meer wel aan de wat donkere kant, waardoor in de muziek over het geheel voortdurend de nodige dreiging doorklinkt.
Het album sluit af met twee fraaie tracks. Het orkestrale en melodieuze 'Oates comes Through' is prima beluisterbaar, vooral na de vele horrorachtige tracks ervoor. Maar 'Never Better' is een van de fraaiste tracks van het album, met een stevige underscore en met de themamelodie daar bovenuit, gespeeld op de elektrische gitaar. Een erg aangename afsluiter van het album.
Kortom, met zijn muziek voor Komodo heeft John Debney een score gecomponeerd voor een horrorfilm, waarin de rustiger en fraaiere, meer harmonische elementen duidelijk terugkomen. Natuurlijk blijft het een horrorscore, toch is een redelijk deel van de muziek best wel aangenaam beluisterbaar, wat bij een reguliere horrorscore meestal toch wel anders is. In die zin zijn er de nodige overeenkomsten met Edelman's score voor de succesvolle film Anaconda. Ook Debney heeft een meer verhalende aanpak, waarbij de heftige horrorklanken en schrikaanjagende elementen zeker niet ontbreken. De meer emotionele momenten in de score doen het goed, en zorgen ervoor dat de score als geheel niet af gaat stoten, al helpen die horror-elementen in de muziek natuurlijk niet mee om dit tot een echt aangename score te maken. De waardering voor aangename beluisterbaarheid komt toch nog op 56 uit 100 punten, wat voor een horrorscore toch heel behoorlijk is.

Set on Emerald Island, off the coast of North Carolina, the film begins with the careless discarding of crates of komodo dragon eggs during stormy weather. Over the span of eighteen years, the lizards grow to very large proportions and begin hunting larger prey as their hunger grows and smaller prey becomes scarce. KOMODO tells the story of Patrick Connally, a troubled teenager who witnesses his parents being devoured by komodo dragons in his home on Emerald Island. Rescued and sent to the mainland for treatment of his trauma, he is put in the care of Victoria (Hennessy), a psychiatrist who believes that returning with Patrick to the island to confront and overcome what she assumes is simple post-traumatic stress is the solution. Unknown to them, an oil company has taken over the island and has begun to hunt down the rare komodo dragons, with the intention of covering up their existence and the death toll they have begun to accumulate. Oates (Burke), a biologist for the oil company, is being blackmailed by his boss to eradicate the remaining lizards, along with any problematic witnesses. Patrick returns to his home on the island with his aunt and Victoria and something stirs in the nearby forest, something that has a healthy appetite…
KOMODO was the directorial debut of Oscar-winning special effects man Michael Lantieri, predating the current trend of giant, mega and dino-sized creatures that currently terrorize us on sea, sky and land. Lantieri brought in Phil Tippett, both of whom had won special effects Oscars for JURASSIC PARK, to manage the computer graphics, and the John Cox Creature Workshop, in Australia where the film would be shot, to handle the animatronic lizards. The result is a nearly seamless blend of CGI, puppet heads and tails, and animatronic komodo that enhance the film without calling undue attention to the mix of effects. Filmed in Brisbane on Australia’s Gold Coast, production designer George Liddle built most of the sets on location. It was Lantieri’s film editor, Michael Fallavollita, who suggested his friend, John Debney, for the film’s score. Lantieri had met Debney earlier when he was working on Amblin Studios’ SEAQUEST television series, which Debney had scored. Debney had previously scored 1997’s THE RELIC, a monster film about a primitive reptilian creature roaming the Chicago Natural History Museum, and which serves as a close musical cousin to KOMODO.

His unique ability to create memorable work across a variety of genres, as well as his reputation for being remarkably collaborative, have made him the first choice of top level producers and directors.
